General Curtis M. Scaparrotti, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and First Deputy Minister of Defence met today, 19 April 2018, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
 
The two military leaders used the SACEUR - Russian CHOD channel to foster predictability and transparency.  The conversation focused on issues related to military posture and exercises.  This face-to-face meeting demonstrates a clear mutual interest to maintain the military lines of communication, to align with NATO's policy of dialogue and transparency.
 
This meeting follows General Petr Pavel, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee and General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and First Deputy Minister of Defence meeting on 7 September 2017, in Baku, Azerbaijan.
 
General Scaparrotti and General Gerasimov agreed to continue using the military lines of communication in the future.
